Cotacachi – a small town in north central Ecuador. Political centre for the Canton Cotacachi (sort of like a county seat) in the province of Imbabura. It is a beautiful little town nestled in the valley between two extinct volcanoes – Imbabura and Cotacachi. It is recognized by UNESCO for being 100% literate.
The main street in town – 10 de Augusto – is affectionately known as Leather Street, so named for the dozens of boutique shops that sell beautiful leather goods handmade right in town.
Every morning around 9:00 or so, the stores start to open. People come out and clean the windows and sidewalks, pick up any trash left out, and generally care for their beautiful town. It is very refreshing to see…
